Motorcycle accidents in Phoenix: what to know
Riders in Phoenix share I-10, I-17, Loop 101, Loop 202 and SR-51 and busy surface streets with drivers who often do not see them. Even at low speed, a rider has no protection, and injuries are often serious.
How these crashes happen
- A car turns left across the rider's path
- A driver changes lanes without checking the blind spot

- Potholes, gravel and uneven pavement
Insurers often assume the rider was speeding or careless. Bias against riders is real, so the evidence matters: video, skid marks, the damage to both vehicles and witness statements.
Arizona rules that shape your case
- Helmets. Arizona requires helmets for riders and passengers under 18 (ARS 28-964). Adults may ride without one, but insurers may still argue that a missing helmet made a head injury worse.
- Lane filtering. Since 2022, Arizona allows a motorcycle to pass between stopped vehicles in the same direction, at 15 mph or less, on roads with a speed limit of 45 mph or less (ARS 28-903.01). Riding between lanes in moving traffic is still not allowed.
- Partly at fault? You can still recover. Arizona reduces your compensation by your share of the blame, but does not take it away (ARS 12-2505).
- Deadlines vary. How long you have depends on the type of case and who is responsible. Claims against a government agency, such as ADOT, the City of Phoenix or Valley Metro, can have deadlines measured in months. In Arizona, a notice of claim must be filed before you can sue a public entity (ARS 12-821.01), and the time to file it is short. Call early.
