Irvine is the third largest city in Orange County, the 16th largest city in California, and the 85th largest city in the United States based on population. While the land where the city lies has an interesting history dating back to the indigenous group that inhabited the area about 2,000 years ago, the city wasn’t name Irvine until 1914. James Irvine bought his partners’ interests of a ranch that spanned 110,000 acres and stretched 23 miles in 1878. After his death in 1886, his son who was also a James Irvine, inherited the property. The second James Irvine incorporated it into The Irvine Company. The ranch operation shifted to citrus crops, olives, and field crops.

The Santa Fe Railroad extended its line to Fallbrook Junction, which is just north of San Diego. A railway station was given the name James Irvine. A town formed around the station, and it was called Myford, which was Irvine’s son’s name. Later, the town was renamed Irvine, the name that it continues to carry today. When James Irvine died in 1947, his son Myford took over as the company president and began opening small sections of the land for urban development.

When Myford died in 1959, the University of California asked the company for 1,000 acres for a new campus. The company sold 1,000 acres to the university for $1. An additional 500 acres were sold to the state. The university hired William Pereira as consulting architect, and The Irvine Company drew up master plans for a city that would accommodate 50,000 people around the university. The plan included residential, industrial, and recreational areas, commercial centers, and even greenbelts. The new community was named Irvine and the older ranching community renamed East Irvine. By 1970 the first phases of several villages were completed, and the following year the residents voted to incorporate a much larger city than one had ever envisioned.

Irvine, California Traffic Accidents

Auto accidents happen in California, and throughout Orange County and Irvine. Orange County has 3.14 million residents, and the California Department of Motor Vehicles reports 2,116,173 vehicles are registered in Orange County alone. When trucks, trailers, buses, and other vehicles are included in a regular day’s traffic count, there are at least 2.7 million vehicles traveling on Orange County roadways. With that many cars on the road, it should not be of any surprise that accidents happen every day.

The California Office of Traffic Safety, there were 1,306 traffic accidents  that involved injury or death in Irvine during 2014. Eighty-three of those car accidents involved alcohol and 33 involved a driver who had been drinking. Speed was involved in 388 of those crashes and 79 occurred at night, between 9 p.m. and 2:59  a.m. Broken down, 59 accidents involved motorcycles, 30 involved pedestrians, and 83 involved bicyclists. Irvine had 576 DUI arrests during that same year.

What Causes Irvine Car Accidents?

There are several causes for car accidents in Irvine, but most of the time a crash could have been avoided. The majority of accidents are chalked up to the driver’s error or his or her behavior. This can mean a driver was operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, was driving recklessly, or was operating a vehicle while distracted.

There are many distractions for drivers in this day and age. There are many more problems than texting or using a cellphone, which is a legitimate issue. Distracted driving is defined as “any activity that can divert a person’s attention from the primary task, which is driving. All distractions endanger driver, passenger, and bystander safety.”

Distracted driving could involve caring for a child in the backseat instead of focusing on the road. If a child needs attention, the car should be pulled off the roadway and parked. It could also involve eating, trying to read a map, switching out CDs or focusing on finding a different station on the radio, it could involve grooming such as brushing hair or applying makeup, or it could be one of dozens of other distractions that cause you to take your eye off the road.

Studies have shown that to read or send a text takes an average of 4.7 seconds. If a vehicle is traveling at 55 miles per hour, it would travel the full length of a football field during that time. That is far enough to cause an accident and do some serious damage. Distracted driving continues to be a problem all across the country. If you have been injured by a distracted driver, you should consult with an Irvine auto accident injury attorney at Torklaw.

Irvine Motorcycle Crashes

As previously mentioned, there were 59 motorcycle accidents that involved fatalities or injuries in Irvine in 2014. That doesn’t include the numerous other crashes that just resulted in property damage. Motorcycles are a popular form of transportation, so there might be thousands of them traveling on Irvine roadways at any given time. Motorcyclists love Irvine because of the warm weather that allows riding bikes year round.

motorcycle death attorneyWhile a motorcyclist can easily be at fault for a crash, the majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by the driver of another vehicle, such as a car or a truck. While it is chalked up to human error, it is really not. The human eye and brain work together in unique fashion, so there might not be enough time for something the size of a motorcycle with a rider to be input into the brain and for the image to register with the driver.

Making sure you are visible is essential for motorcyclists. There are several things you can do to make sure you stand out in the crowd and get noticed by drivers. Remember, motorcycle safety is detrimental to avoiding crashes. While all crashes are never going to be avoided, you can significantly decrease your odds of being involved in one.

Motorcycle Safety Tips for Irvine Cyclists

The key to motorcycle safety is staying visible. Here are a few tips to help you be noticed by drivers:

Fluorescent Colors  – Wear brightly colored gear. If you wear traditional colors, such as green, brown, blue, or black you tend to blend in with the surroundings. Wearing fluorescent colors, such as lime green, neon yellow, hot pink, or bright orange can help you get attention when you are riding with traffic.

Ride Predictably – Always signal and don’t swerve in and out of traffic. Instead, ride so drivers will know where you are heading so they will not cut off you off or run right into you.

Use Brake Lights – You can make use of your brake lights to make yourself stand out more. Tap your brakes a few times before you stop so there will be a flashing warning to drivers behind you. That flashing light might get their attention.

Modulators – Studies have shown that modulators are effective in keeping the attention of drivers. Modulators make your headlights and/or tail lights continuously flash. This flashing makes drivers more alert so they will pay attention and avoid a collision.

Intersections – Intersections are dangerous for cyclists. If you approach an intersection, adhere to the laws of the road. Don’t just zip through. If you have right-of-way, go through slowly and keep an eye out for drivers so you can act defensively should the need arise. Be ready to get out of the way of drivers who do not notice you and your bike.

Night Riding – When riding at night, make sure you and your bike are decked out with reflectors. Put reflective tape on your back and chest as well as your helmet. Make sure your bike’s lights are all working properly and that there are reflectors located on the sides of the bike as well. Reflective bands on the wrists and ankles are also beneficial.

Cycling Crashes in Irvine

If you enjoy riding a bicycle, you aren’t alone. The number of cyclists continues to grow across the country because cycling is a fun, healthy, and environmentally friendly way to get where you need to go. Unfortunately, many cyclists are injured or even killed in crashes with vehicles. Here are some tips to stay safe when cycling in Irvine:

  • Watch for loose gravel and potholes.
  • Ride at a safe speed so you can maintain control.
  • Wear bright clothing so you can stand out.
  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Don’t get too close to parked cars, stay four feet away to avoid being doored.
  • Make eye contact at intersections before proceeding so you know that they saw you.
  • Keep your hand on the brake and be ready to use it when passing through an intersection.
  • When riding on the road, ride in the middle of the lane so drivers will see you and not pass too closely.
  • Watch for pedestrians and alert them verbally of your approach.
