Adam Huskey Killed In Clearlake Car Accident on Emory Avenue by Mullen Avenue

CLEARLAKE, CALIFORNIA (July 27, 2022) – A skateboarder identified as Adam Huskey has died in a Clearlake car accident by Emory Avenue and Mullen Avenue.

Lake County officials are saying that the accident took place on Monday. Adam Huskey was riding a bicycle when he was hit by a Chevy Silverado pickup truck.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. Despite the best efforts of first responders, Adam Huskey was pronounced dead following the collision.

Police arrested the driver of the Chevy Silverado on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability In Clearlake Pedestrian Accidents

Skateboarders are particularly vulnerable  in motor vehicle accidents. They lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more likely to be overlooked.  According to the Centers for Disease Control, “More than 7,000 pedestrians were killed on our nation’s roads in crashes involving a motor vehicle in 2020. That’s about one death every 75 minutes.” Elderly pedestrians and younger pedestrians under 14 are more likely to be involved in collisions. There are a number of steps that drivers should take in order to avoid hitting pedestrians.

  • All drivers should check their blind spots before making turns in the roadway.
  • All drivers should scan the road ahead of them for potential hazards.
  • All drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

The vast majority of pedestrian collisions involve some amount of driver error. Many collisions are due to drivers that fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in lawfully marked crosswalks. Pursuant to California Vehicle Code 22450, the driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign shall stop at a limit line before proceeding through the intersection. If the driver of a vehicle goes past a yield sign without yielding, this may be considered prima facie evidence of their failure to yield.

Pickup trucks are often used for commercial purposes such as construction or landscaping. If the driver of a pickup truck was working a the time of a collision, their employer could potentially be held at fault. Generally speaking, companies are liable for the wrongful actions of their employees – insofar as those employees were working within the course and scope of their job duties. Victims of pedestrian collisions tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

When a driver’s conduct is particularly egregious, they could potentially be held at fault through a criminal claim. Family members of the deceased may also be able to seek some measure of justice through a bodily injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Sadly, though, insurance companies will often fight hard to deny responsibility for any collision. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
