Woman Died At Robert Presley Detention Center In Riverside

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA (November 22, 2022) – A female inmate has tragically died in custody while staying at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside.

Riverside County police officials are saying that the incident began around 3:35 p.m. on Sunday. A female inmate was discovered unresponsive in her jail cell.

Correctional officers began life-saving measures and paramedics were called. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, the woman was later pronounced dead.

A full investigation into the death at the Robert Presley Detention Center remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Riverside Inmate Deaths

This year, 2022, has been one of the deadliest on records for in custody inmate deaths in Riverside County. This most recent death on Sunday has marked the 16th death this year alone. Sadly, though, in custody deaths are increasingly common across the United States. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “In 2019, a total of 3,853 prisoners died in state prisons or private prison facilities under a state contract, a decrease of 284 deaths from 2018.” There are a number of steps that correctional facilities should take to prevent in custody deaths.

  • Jails should be adequately staffed.
  • Correctional officers should be well trained.
  • Correctional officers should perform regular safety checks on inmates.

Jails have a legal obligation to provide reasonably adequate healthcare to prisoners. They should also perform a health screening on new inmates. When a jail is deliberately indifferent to the serious medical needs of an inmate, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. For example, a jail may not have provided an inmate adequate care if they were undergoing a medical emergency. There are a number of steps that should be taken after any in custody death.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Surveillance footage should be reviewed.
  • A thorough, independent investigation should be conducted.

The family of any inmate that dies in custody may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that come with the sudden loss of a loved one. However, jails will often fight hard to deny liability for any inmate death. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
