National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week – Nov 12th – 18th
While most of us prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving next week, this week we will be observing National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (Nov. 12th – 18th). The purpose of this observance is to bring our communities closer to the realities of abject poverty and homelessness. Non-profit organizations and volunteers nationwide will be participating in various activities to bring greater awareness, educate and help promote our national duty to help end hunger and homelessness.
Today, it is estimated that there are 350,000 homeless here in California and 80,000 in Los Angeles County alone. The reality is that there is no one formula that causes homelessness and therefore no one formula that is going to end homelessness. Some who are homeless are addicted to drugs or are alcoholics and are in need of treatment. Some are mentally ill and are in serious need of medical attention. But whatever the root cause(s), homelessness is a serious issue challenging our communities and it is one that requires serious attention.
