Helicopters are relatively safe, as long as all the proper safety procedures are being followed. According to one report from Business Insider, “Like with any other mode of transportation, from driving a car to flying on a commercial jumbo jet, the safety of helicopter flights depends on the safety practices of the owner and operator.” The helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and the crash near Los Angeles that killed 9 people both involved major lapses in safety protocols. There are a number of steps that helicopter pilots should take in order to avoid crashes.

  • Helicopter pilots should perform a preflight inspection.
  • Helicopter pilots should not take risks in bad weather.
  • Helicopter pilots should not fly lower than 1,000 feet above ground.
  • Helicopter pilots should eliminate distractions while flying.

When a worker is injured on the job, they will typically have recourse through a worker’s compensation claim. Worker’s compensation is a no-fault insurance scheme. There is no need for any worker to demonstrate that another party was at fault. It can help cover many of the expenses that can come with being injured on the job. Depending on the facts of any case, an injured worker may be able to seek aid through a third party liability claim.

A third party liability claim may be possible when an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to an accident. For example, the company responsible for maintaining a helicopter could be liable if a helicopter crash was caused by a improper maintenance. The manufacturer of a helicopter could also be held at fault for a crash through a product liability claim. There are a number of steps that should be taken after a helicopter crash.

  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • Medical records should be examined.
  • Maintenance records should be sought.
  • The helicopter involved should be investigated.

Any person that is injured in a PG&E helicopter crash may have legal recourse through a bodily injury claim. Damages can help cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. Many victims will not realize the full extent of their injuries for several weeks or months after a collision. An aviation accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
