Liability For South Los Angeles Shootings

The United States has one of the highest rates of gun related homicides in the world. According to the Pew Research Center, “More Americans died of gun-related injuries in 2020 than in any other year on record, according to recently published statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).” Victims shootings tend to suffer serious injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • PTSD
  • Spinal cord injuries

Depending on the facts of any case, a property owner may be liable if someone is shot on their property. Property owners must maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This includes taking steps to protect guests from criminal activity. To that end, a property owner may need to hire security or take other measures to deter violent crime. The level and depth of the security measures that a property owner may need will vary from one location to another. There are many steps that should be taken after any shooting.

  • Eye witnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • The history of crime at the property in questions should be understood.

The family of any person that died in a shooting may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the expenses that come with the sudden loss of a loved one. Sadly, though, property owners will often fight hard to deny liability for shooting on their property. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
