25 Police Recruits Injured In Whittier Car Accident on Telegraph Avenue

WHITTIER, CALIFORNIA (November 12, 2022) – A man driving to work in Whittier veered into the wrong lane and hit 25 police cadets while they were jogging on Telegraph Avenue.

Los Angeles County police officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:25 a.m. on Wednesday. The driver of an SUV veered into the wrong lane before striking a group of dozens of cadets.

The SUV came to a stop after hitting a light pole. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims. At least five cadets were critically injured and taken to the hospital.

Sixteen of the cadets had moderate injuries. Authorities do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the crash. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For Whittier Pedestrian Accidents

Los Angeles County has one of the highest instances of pedestrian accidents across California. According to LAist, “In 2019, 134 people were killed by drivers while walking in Los Angeles. That’s about one death every two-and-a-half days. In fact, pedestrian deaths increased from 87 in 2014 — or nearly 55% over 5 years.” There are a number of factors that could potentially contribute to a car accident.

  • Inclement weather
  • The glare of the sun
  • A stuck accelerator
  • Driver distraction

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. They must also operate their vehicle at a safe speed so that they do not lose control of their vehicle. If a driver goes into opposing lanes of traffic prior to hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious and costly injuries including:

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

When a worker is injured on the job, they will typically have recourse through a worker’s compensation claim. An injured worker may also be able to seek damages through a third party liability claim. A third party liability claim may be possible if an entity separate from a worker’s employer contributed to a collision. Any person that is injured in a collision may be able to pursue damages through a bodily injury claim.
