Tragic Semi-Truck Incident in Illinois: 5 Lives Lost and Ammonia Leak Forces Resident Evacuation

In a recent tragic incident, a cargo tank, which was filled with 7,500 gallons of anhydrous ammonia, met with an accident near Teutopolis, Illinois on U.S. Highway 40. Our team at TorkLaw deeply sympathizes with the victims and is dedicated to raising awareness about the implications of such accidents.

The accident, which took place on Friday, September 29th, involved multiple vehicles and led to the unfortunate death of five individuals. An additional six people were hospitalized, with their identities yet to be revealed.

Due to the severe impact, the cargo tank started leaking its contents. The resulting danger forced the evacuation of approximately 500 local residents, as highlighted by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

The preliminary insights provided by NTSB board member, Tom Chapman, pointed out that the accident occurred when a semi-truck driver swerved to the right, reacting to another vehicle on the road. This maneuver caused the truck to roll over, leading to a compromise in the cargo tank’s integrity. The situation worsened when the compromised tank collided with a utility trailer parked nearby, causing a significant leak of the toxic anhydrous ammonia.

Chapman emphasized, “We will not be determining the probable cause of the crash while we were on scene, nor will we speculate about the cause.” The NTSB team is expected to be on-site for the coming week, with an initial report anticipated in the next month. The final, detailed report will likely take a year or more.

Effingham County Sheriff, Paul Kuhns, described the aftermath as a “large plume” emanating from the ammonia leak. This dangerous situation led to air conditions so hazardous that immediate evacuation was ordered for the safety of the residents. Access to the crash site itself was delayed due to the perilous conditions.

In a heartfelt statement, Kuhns acknowledged the bravery of the first responders, saying, “We have a lot of brave firemen, EMT, hazmat specialists, and police officers working diligently at the scene.”

It’s essential to note the danger posed by anhydrous ammonia. When inhaled, especially in high concentrations, it can prove fatal. It’s a toxic substance that can cause severe burns on the skin, damage the eyes, and lead to serious respiratory injuries.

At TorkLaw, we believe in keeping our community informed and safe. Incidents like these highlight the importance of safety standards and precautions.
