Scapholunate Ligament Tear Caused by Accident
One of the most common injuries we see here at TorkLaw as a result of bicycle accidents or motorcycle accidents or slip and falls is the scapholunate ligament tear in the wrist. Often times, clients who are involved in bike accidents try to brace their fall by placing their palms underneath as they strike the ground or a vehicle.
This is a very painful injury which often times requires numerous diagnostic testing to identify and surgery to repair.
The force and trauma that the unexpected load wrist is exposed to is often so severe that a very important ligament called the scapholunate is often damaged. The scapholunate ligament plays a critical role in the wrist by providing stabilization to the bones allowing for proper wrist movement.
Damage to the scapholunate cannot been seen on an x-ray and is often accompanied by a fracture in the scaphoid or lunate bones. An MRI could also miss the tear if it is small. Some doctors will use an arthrogram MRI which uses an injection of dye in the wrist .
There are four (4) types of scapholunate ligament tears:
- Predynamic or occult: This is as mild as a scapholunate injury may be categorized and cannot be seen in an x-ray. Generally, this category includes a partial tear.
- Dynamic: A dynamic scapholunate injury is when the ligament is completely torn or damaged so severely that it is not functioning the way it should. Again, not seen on an x-ray.
- Static: A static scapholunate injury is when the ligament is completely torn and the surrounding scaphoid, lunate or other surrounding bones are damaged as well.
- Advanced Collapse (SLAC): When the scapholunate ligament is completely torn and has caused various forms of arthiritis.
