Fatal Construction Site Accident on Northwestern University Campus
Michael Kerr, a man working on a construction site at Northwestern University’s Evanston campus, was struck by a beam that fell on him from six stories above this morning. According to witnesses, a construction crane came in contact with the unsecured beam, which was knocked loose from upper story and fell directly on Kerr, causing severe head and chest injuries. Sadly, Kerr was pronounced dead at 8:55 a.m. at NorthShore University Hospital in Evanston,
Work was immediately halted at the construction site following the tragic incident. Power Construction Company of Schaumburg, Illinois is the main contractor on the $108 million project, which will be the new home for Northwestern’s Bienen School of Music. At this time, it has yet to be determined whether Power Construction or one of its many subcontractors is responsible for the unsecured beam and resulting deadly accident.
OSHA has announced that it is investigating the Kerr’s fatal incident. As of now, no preliminary findings of the investigation have been released, and OSHA representatives have stated that it could take up to six months to complete the investigation.
